An insight into the history of NHS dentistry

On the 5th July 1948, we saw the start of the NHS. 3 forms of dental services became available, and these services are still available today. These are as follows:

1. The local health authority dental service

2. General practitioner services

3.Hospital services

Unlike most other countries, the principles of the NHS meant that anyone residing in the country were eligible for health treatments.

These principles were that almost 100% of treatments were paid for through tax and people were made to pay dependent on how much they earnt, ie. rich people paid more than the poor. Anyone residing in the UK as well as visitors were eligible for treatment, whether it be at a local surgery or hospital. When the NHS started, oral healthcare was entirely free of charge, however, over the years, the government decided to have set fees for dental treatment and prescription medication.

During the second decade of the NHS, the treatments were starting to improve and better drugs became available. In 1956, the GDC (General Dental Council) was established and based in Westminster, London in order to protect the general public as well as keep an up to date list of all regulated dentists in England including dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental nurses as well as technicians. Up to today, the GDC require all dentists adhere by the health and safety regulations and regular checks have been put into place to ensure this happens.

In this present day, all treatments which are important to maintain oral health are still widely available on the NHS. Many dentists who provide NHS treatments, also choose to provide private treatments and since 2006, the treatments are not as available as they once were, forcing many patients to resort to private treatments.

Google Glasses: A Glance into a Future in which the Internet is Inescapable?

As you are probably aware, Google are about to launch “Google Glasses”.

They will cost £975 a pair and will feature a camera, voice-activated controls and send sounds to the ear.

The display will be just above the right eye and there you can search the internet (for directions, take photos, translate languages and more) and send messages, just as with your desktop or laptop. Storage of data will be via Google’s cloud, with which the glasses will be synced. They could also be synced with Android smartphones when these run the MyGlass app, which has already been released by Google.

But Google Glasses could be a potential distraction and may need to be banned in certain instances. Such as when driving. It will be interesting to note that should Google Glasses become as prominent as the tablet or smartphone, once your glasses are on, you will always potentially be in ‘work mode’ or ‘on call’, and in a state of accessibility and interactivity for the vast majority of your day.

Google glasses, Apple iPhone, Amazon Kindle, Samsung Galaxy plus all the other brands, are continuously coming to market. Whatever the browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc), whatever the device (desktop, laptop, PC, Mac, tablet, smartphone and soon; glasses) – the flow of information is increasingly now 24/7.

It isn’t news that the PC is being overtaken by the tablet and the smartphone.

Companies like Microsoft face a steep decline into inaptitude unless greater progress in these areas is made, as market analysts predict Android and tablets to outsell laptop and desktops combined as soon as 2015. Furthermore, international polls claim users are increasingly using their tablets and mobile phones for activities they used to rely on their television and computers for, such as watching films, researching and shopping.

Recent reports confirm this.

During the first three months of this year, shipments of laptops and desktops fell 14% worldwide, compared to a year ago (International Data Corporation). This is the fastest fall ever recorded. Sales themselves fell to just 76.3million units.

IBM’s launch of the first desktop was back in 1981, but we are now seeing sales of computers decline. Even Windows 8, Microsoft’s latest offering, has failed to boost PC sales.

This is not only because people are finding Tablets such as Apple’s iPad and Google’s Nexus 7 cheap and convenient in comparison, but also because most people already own a laptop, desktop computer, or both. As a result, shares in firms such as Hewlett Packard and Microsoft are suffering.

For anyone with a business that has an online platform, this trend is of great importance, as online adaption is needed to ensure continued relevancy with clients and prospective clients. So, for your dental marketing you need to think about not just having a website, but also a dedicated mobile website. In other words, a simplified version of your main site that is easy for potential patients to view on a mobile. Whilst this may have once been an elegant extra addition, a mobile website has indeed become a necessity.

Dental Marketing Seminars: WAC, AACD, BACD

Krishan Joshi - the Master

Yesterday, I held my 2nd “Master Class” at the University of Warwick for their Dental Implant MSc students. There were 11 dentists at last week’s workshop and 18 dentists at today’s session.

I spoke about “the Wow website” and how to create “a website that finds you”!

– the 3 main ways to dominate the 1st page of Google with multiple rankings to find your targeted audience, over and over again.

– the importance of YouTube and tagging

– the dangers of Facebook and Twitter

I then gave the class a choice between having a hands on session on either YouTube or Google. Last week they voted for YouTube, how take effective videos, upload and rank them for dental keywords. Today, the group wanted to rank at the top of Google for FREE… so I showed them how. Well, here’s what some of them had to say!

Private dentistry is seeing a massive boom in the UK. From a marketing perspective, to be at the forefront a well designed website is essential.

Having spoken to Krishan a few years ago at Dental Showcase we knew that this was the company we wanted to work with in launching our new website. Throughout this process he has been efficient and offered good honest advice on how to optimise our site to its fullest potential.

Our new website is less than 3 months old and patients/colleagues are giving some fantastic positive feedback, commenting on how refreshing our website looks.
