Facebook requests facial recognition

As GDPR looms, Facebook has been doing its due diligence and seeking explicit written consent from users in Europe and Canada ahead of the changes.

The update to the terms and conditions comes with an optional request to give Facebook access to facial recognition technology which can identify users in photos and videos.

The facial recognition facility works by assigning each user a unique number called a template. This is calculated by analysing the way they look in their profile picture and other images they have been tagged in.

If a match is found, Facebook prompts both the person posting an image and the people appearing in it to apply the relevant name tags. The plus side of this technology is that it can use the technology to detect when a scammer is attempting to use a stolen photo as their profile picture.

Are you comfortable with Facebook using facial recognition technology?
